If Intel fails to execute on Merced, they will be opening the door to the Alpha 21364. Both processors are due out about the same timeframe. The 21364 will use the same processor core as the 21264 but running at 1Ghz. Instead Compaq has been focusing on the memory subsystem believing "memory subsystem design will be the only important design issue for microprocessors."

The 21364 has chosen to put 4 channels of RDRam directly attached to each processor. And the 16 or so multiple processors can be hooked together in a mesh arrangement that avoids the standard shared memory bottleneck.

Compaq can use Intel's fab lines to build the chips, already sells Alpha based servers, and has a good reputation in that market. So we may very well see market share of RDRam based servers independent of what Intel does with Merced.

(Of course, this doesn't offset the impact of the Merced/Rambus revelation on the short term prospects for RMBS's price .)
