Maybe I misunderstand what you're trying to get at, but the trade between broadband systems is, IMO, based on cost & capacity, not "speed" per se. Fundamentally, a satellite or a fiber optic cable is a huge pipe, capable of delivering data at speeds higher than any one person can use (and more expensive than any one person can afford.)

Phones/modems/satellite receivers will allow users to siphon off data at useable/economically attractive rates. But it's the device, not the pipeline that will limit the rate.
