Services grew from next to nothing to $1.6 billion in a year: they yield 32% profit. That having been said, they could have grown more: it also seems likely that there is overlapping and lack of complete integration as between COMPAQ Klassic services and the DEC/Tandem services.

The appointment of a very aggressive services specialist (perhaps from IBM) might help. Meanwhile, Rando's is still working the job, so improvements already in the pipeline should continue to flow until the new person can hit the ground running.

Not so. Rando headed up Services at Compaq. The Digital integration is a job that spreads across many groups at Compaq (Engineering, Marketing, Services, etc). Rando was not involved in the Engineering and Marketing aspects of the Digital integration... just in trying to integrate Compaq Classic services with Digital Services (or visa versa).
