Derek, we are to some extent suffering the artificiality of the arrangements emanating out of Versailles, and the stupidly articulated principle of the self- determination of peoples. Not only would it have been better to have left the existing states to negotiate with their aspiring provinces, so that local conditions could have determined the outcome moreso, but it was a mistake to exalt ethnic nationalism, and to establish the basis for endless claims to self- determination ground smaller and smaller.
