NEW DELHI--The remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan will take its first step on the information highway soon, the official weekly Kuensel said.

The newspaper's latest edition, seen by Reuters today, said the Bhutan government and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) last week signed an agreement to support the development of DrukNet, the country's first Internet service provider.

The UNDP and the regional Asia-Pacific Development Information Program (APDIP) will provide equipment and technical services worth $115,800 to the telecommunications division of Bhutan's ministry of communications.

"Through the telecommunications division, the project is expected to enable DrukNet to promote Internet connectivity and services to the royal government, international organizations, the private sector, and the general public," the paper said.

"With the initial equipment and training provided by UNDP and APDIP, DrukNet will be able to offer this connectivity at a price level that will ensure...long-term sustainability of Internet services in Bhutan," Kuensel quoted a UNDP statement as saying.
