Wind River Ships Tornado II, Sets New Standard for
Building Complex Embedded Software Applications

Tornado II Provides Integrated, Unique Prototyping and Simulation Option Allowing Developers
to Quickly Build Products on Custom Platforms

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND - news), the leader in development
software for the post-PC era, today announced availability of the Tornado(TM) II platform, the first major upgrade to its
award-winning development environment for embedded software, Tornado. Tornado II is targeted at the growing number of
software developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) building complex embedded applications -- particularly
Internet infrastructure products and Internet appliances.

A fifth-generation technology, the new improvements to Tornado II focus on enhancing a developer's out-of-box experience
and accelerated productivity. The most unique feature is a fully integrated simulation environment enabling developers to learn
the tools and begin application development immediately without relying on the availability of hardware.

''The embedded industry is rapidly changing,'' said Jerry Fiddler, co-founder and chairman for Wind River Systems. ''The
lowering costs of key technologies including hardware, bandwidth and displays, and the expansion of the Internet are driving
the emergence of the post-PC era. Innovation is at an all-time high and a new type of developer is entering the embedded
market with different expectations. The ease-of-use in Tornado II will fuel innovation and accelerate the introduction of new
products.''

Tornado II provides a ''quick start'' project creation wizard and automated configuration tool to guide developers through the
task of assembling the components of their eventual application. It also includes an interactive, graphical tool for automatically
configuring Wind River's industry-leading VxWorks® operating system. In addition, Tornado II offers one-button
''autoscaling'' which analyzes user application code and scales VxWorks automatically to include only those features required
for the application.

''The developer's focus is on his specific application, so we were not surprised that across the board -- from leading-edge
Internet start-ups to large telecommunications and aerospace companies -- our beta testers appreciated the productivity
advancements in Tornado II,'' said Curt Schacker, vice president of marketing at Wind River Systems. ''Because Wind River's
WindLink® partner program is the most comprehensive in the embedded industry and we already have a strong base of over
30,000 developers on Tornado, we anticipate that Tornado II will become the most widely-used development platform for
embedded software.''

''Tornado II sets a new standard in development tools for devices built on complex embedded software,'' said David Sawyer,
founder and CEO of Northchurch Communications, one of over 100 firms across a variety of sizes and market-orientations
that tested Tornado II. ''Tornado II's ability to speed up product development cycles -- without sacrificing the most important
Internet technologies -- gives us a strong competitive advantage over firms still using proprietary solutions or other development
environments.''

Availability

Tornado II is available now. Host support is available for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Sun Solaris, and
Hewlett-Packard UNIX workstations. CPU architecture support includes Motorola PowerPC, 68K and CPU32; Intel x86,
Pentium, StrongARM, and i960; MIPS; ARM; and SPARC. For more information on the Tornado II platform or any of Wind

Peter,

Have you seen the following news item on Micrsoft's plans to invest in the UK's Cable and Wireless Communications?

cbs.marketwatch.com

If my memory serves me right, didn't Cable and Wireless have WIND's OS in their set top boxes? I hope I am wrong, but if not, then this could be a potential threat to our beloved WIND...

Wondering if you or anyone else may have any comments on this development?
