FDA TO SCRUTINIZE DRUGS CLEARED UNDER ACCELERATED-REVIEW POLICY

From Tribune News Services
May 11, 1999
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Amid criticism that its speedier reviews jeopardize patient safety, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday that it plans to increase its oversight of new drugs and devices after they enter the market.

In an announcement issued at Rockville, Md., the agency also said it would improve analysis of information that FDA officials collect about patients' reactions to products.

The measures follow an internal review ordered in December by FDA Commissioner Jane Henney. She asked a task force to examine how drug safety had changed since the agency began streamlining its reviews in 1990.

Officials found that, despite a record number of new drug approvals in recent years, the percentage of recalls from the market had not changed significantly in 20 years.

Between 1 percent and 3.5 percent of drugs have been recalled for safety reasons each year since 1979, the reviewers reported.

"The number of adverse events is no greater, in fact is probably less, than what occurred when the system was quite slow," Henney said.

Consumer groups have charged that five drug withdrawals in the past two years show that the agency gave the green light too soon in some cases.

I saw on CNBC this evening that Bear Stearns' recommendations were ranked the worst of any on the list. If you had followed their recommendations last year, you would have ended the year negative. Aren't they the ones who were caught manipulating VVUS?
