You have nooo clue buddy about what will be important in the industry in the next few years.... If MSFT thinks like you then they truly are in more trouble than I thought. NOS/SOS are quickly becoming a commodity (unfortunately for MSFT) and the future is in the control of the DS because that is a critical new technology of the next wave of the Internet and e-commerce. The server that I run my application on will not be a big deal very shortly since open industry standards like Java, XML, CORBA, JNDI, etc. will allow corporations to develop and run applications on whatever the best platform is at the time. If the server supports JVM and I have my new mission-critical apps in Java, then I dont care if its running on NT, NetWare, Solaris, or OS/390. It was MSFT who started the "NOSes are just a commodity" concept in order to reduce NetWare's overwhelming control of the market. They were very successful in the strategy. Problem is - now they have slipped up majorly on their NT5 deployment and meanwhile the industry has entrenched the open standards that will allow applications to be portable and not tied to a specific platform - NT. They have executed on their server platforms while NT struggles to put something out to market. So, while you are so focused on which is the best server OS and platform, companies like NOVL are realizing that the future in not in the OS but in the Directory. But there is no use trying to convince the paradigm blind. You are stuck in the 80s paradigm that MSFT is technically stuck in. NOVL and many other companies have moved into the next paradigm of an OS-portable directory connected networked environment. Just look at the Internet Jim!! What OS is the market leader in the Internet? Let me answer for you - NONE and nor does any corporation care! The standards are so open in the Internet that any OS that meets the standards will meet their needs. When you hit a server, you don't know that your hitting an Intel server, Unix box, or mainframe! BUT, the power of the directory is still up for grabs. LDAP will be the likely inter-connect of DSes, but NDS is currently the clear leader in Keystone DSes. A DS is not a commodity at this point since most DSes cannot provide the scaleabiltiy, functionality, and ubiquity that NDS can right now. I will tell you that "he who controls the DS - will have a lot of power in the Internet and e-commerce". We'll see how NOVL's stock looks like in the next 1-2 years. Print your posting and this posting and pull it out in 2 years. Then tell me which one of us was the fool and which one was right. Tell me if the OS or the DS was the minor product in the industry in 2 years. Fortunately for MSFT, they realize the immense power of the DS. Unfortunately for MSFT, they didnt have the vision to begin building a true scaleable DS like NOVL did 8 years ago. They had the vision to see that a better Directory was needed than their Bindery Services. MSFT was too busy trying to catch up to NOVL's NOS marketshare to look into the future and realize that their 70's designed DOMAINS are going to give them grief some day. Now they will be spending several years (as much as a 6-9 years) trying to catch up to NOVL again in DS marketshare. Server technology is a minor product in the future because it will become a commodity. DS will be the product you should be thinking about. Tell me when you make your own personal paradigm shift and see the light. I have seen this new paradigm for over 2 years but no one was ready to listen. As of mid last year the industry finally began to see the value of Directory Services. A year from now even you will see the light Jim. Trust me! Toy
