IBM is expected to announce an agreement reached with Nintendo whereby the company will supply a new processor based on PowerPC architecture for next generation Nintendo machines.

This is pretty good news. As you know even though PowerPC processors are typically 1/3 the size of comparable Intel processors and thus are suppose to be significantly cheaper to produce, but because PowerPC processors ship in much lower volume than Intel snails, each PPC chip must bear a greater portion of R&D cost. As a result the theoretical cost savings of PPC rarely ever translated into the kind of price advantage AIM alliance had envisioned. Hopefully the combination of... a steady increase in Apple's unit shipment, MOT's growing success of expanding PPC usage in embedded market, and IBM's plan to use PPC processors in set-top and Nintendo machines.. will all help to boost overall PowerPC unit shipment volume. This will help lower the cost of PPC processors and make it even more competitive in the market.
