OT Re "chops"... I run a very fine conmmunity youth orchestra. About 10 years ago, I got a call from an 8th grade boy from a very small lumber community up in the hills. He wanted to audition on trumpet for an opening in my group. I told him that as an 8th grader, he did not have much of a chance competing against HS and University students, but he insisted that he could play. His audition later that week is one of my all time favorite memories. He walked in with several fine instruments, pulled out a "D" Pic. trumpet and nailed the 1st mvt. of the Bach Brandenburg #2. As I sat in stunned dis-belief, he pulled out a "C" trumpet and played the first part of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets. As it turned out, his dad was a logger but had found a love for classical music and bought his son a trumpet at age 5. The kid learned by listening to classical LPs. He had been lucky enough to pick up some good instruction along the way, but believe it or not, was mostly self taught. I called a friend of mine when I got home and set him up with a fine teacher. For the next five years, I did'nt worry about anything in the trumpet section. He wound up getting a full ride to U of Arizona and last I heard was Principal Trumpet in a major European orchestra at the age of 22. I was glad that I agreed to hear his audition. What a wonderful world..
