an app with well thought out accelerator keys will run rings around a mouse-centric app.

VIM (VI iMproved) is available on almost all platforms (including Win95). If you can stand a little bloat (although 1/10th as much as MS Word), then Emacs is another good cross-platform choice.

Your best option for speed is to wipe that hard-disk and install a nice Linux or *BSD solution. Use vmware (www.vmware.com) for those seldom-needed apps that only run on Win32.

None of the boosters here seem to want to admit it but the management of MSFT is definitely running scared at this point.
