The Chinese diplomatic representation stayed in Belgrade to show support for Milosevic in his opposition to NATO and also to hint to the U.S. that China would not let them freewheeling in the Balkans...

Notwithstanding, besides the Chinese embassy, there are other remarkable buildings in Belgrade: the McDonalds fastfood for instance --how come not a single cruise missile strayed down to the McDonalds? Hey, I've got an idea: all the diplomatic missions still in Belgrade should safely relocate in the McDonalds building!

It's clear that China is the stumbling block in the US plan for a fair Kosovo settlement, that is An iron NATO Hand in a velvet UN Glove! Such an outcome would put all the gear levers in the hands of the US when the after-war negotiations will resume... The pro-UN legalistic crowd will be gratified: the UN's put back in the game; and the US, who have carried the heaviest burden during all the air campaign, will keep a ''controlling shareholding'' in the geopolitical reshaping of the Balkans.

But it seems that such a simple deal is not to please the Chinese... China still wants to stick to the old-fashioned way: deploying Chilean, Sri Lankan, and New Zealander troops under the command of some Congolese General... Like in Bosnia. So, I guess that Chancellor G. Schroeder's salesmanship is somehow to find out what do the Chinese want in exchange for their support of a UN/NATO peacekeeping operation. Maybe a foldaway seat by the WTO? Sounds a good bargain to you?

EepOpp---My impression is that you are right about inessential personnel, but that a presence would be maintained for essential tasks, including monitoring the situation...
