By the end of the year there will be online trading of US stocks through Australian online brokers

I think this is adding significant $$ to the US markets. There are these canadian guys on the msft thread, they say the Canadian government only allows a % of investment in retirement money in US stocks. However, index funds are immune from the rule, since index funds can contain canadian stocks. Therefore they put the 20% allocation (or whatever it is) into msft or dell or whatever and the rest in a Naz index fund. I wonder how many canadians are doing this - I'll bet a lot, you might as well include them in the US investor pool (and they never were there before really)
