Tech Firms Form Group to Set Software Standards

Twenty-five technology companies announced the formation of a consortium to develop guidelines and standards for a new class of software-service company. The group is being formed to stimulate a new industry for application-service providers, companies that centrally provide software services from data centers over a computer network, the companies said. Initial members of the ASP Industry Consortium, as the group is called, include AT&T Corp., International Business Machines Corp., Compaq Computer Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc., Sharp Electronics Corp. and Citrix Systems Inc.
