Lucent Technologies Deploys Optical
Networking System for Telefonica

Second Optical Networking Contract With Telefonica in Last 6 Months

MADRID, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1999-- Lucent Technologies
(NYSE: LU -
news) today announced that it will supply Telefonica de Espana with
high-capacity optical
networking systems in the cities of Galicia, Asturias, Leon and the Andalucia
region (covering
Cadiz, Malaga and Seville).

This contract is Lucent's second optical networking contract with Telefonica.
Last December,
Lucent announced that it is supplying an advanced optical network to provide a
540 kilometre
link connecting Madrid and Seville, in Telefonica's first application of this
technology.

Under the new agreement, Lucent will supply its WaveStar(TM)OLS 80G, a
high-capacity dense
wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system that combines up to 16
wavelengths, or
channels, on one fibre pair -- each with 2.5 gigabit-per-second (Gb/s) capacity.
DWDM enables
carriers to increase the capacity of fibre-optic networks by transmitting
information as different
wavelengths/colours of light on the same fibre.

With a total capacity of up to 40 Gb/s in both directions on one fibre pair,
carriers can transmit
the equivalent of half a million simultaneous phone calls per second.

Lucent is a leader in the optical networking industry. The company has already
delivered
approximately 2,000 DWDM systems globally and has deployed them on six of
the seven
continents -- the largest deployment of any optical networking vendor. And,
according to KMI
Corporation's recent report for 1998, Lucent has the largest share- 29 percent -
of the $2.2
billion global DWDM market. Lucent has announced contracts for its DWDM
systems with
major customers around the world including AT&T, US West, Bell Atlantic and
Time Warner
Telecom in US, BT of the UK, NETs of France, and Worldport and KPN in
Netherlands, among
others.

In the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, Lucent has approximately 17,000
employees at 98
locations in 27 countries. The company's research and development arm, Bell
Labs, has a
presence in 10 countries across the region.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, New Jersey, US, designs,
builds and
delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems
and software,
data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronics
components. For
