>>They must have a reason.!<< Of course, Cisco is so large that it can explore multiple, parallel technologies. This is just a method of risk management, assuming you can develop all the technologies successfully...in this case Cisco failed to produce a successful product for the winning technology. For the carrier backbone, ATM seems to be the winner which vindicates TM's all-or-nothing bet on ATM. It could easily have gone the other way. IP over Sonet may still be a viable technology for certain niche's (campus systems?). I don't know enough about it to say.

Don't get me wrong. I'm NOT a Cisco basher. A small investment in Cisco 7 years ago has made me quite comfortable today, thank you very much...
