Junior: well I have been using both and my failure rate on Windows is two orders of magnitude greater than Linux (which I have never had lock up). Also have worked at Kinko's on WINSLOP machines. Everytime I go I must ask the technical administrator to reboot the machine because she has locked up at least twice a visit. Windows reliability is miserable. Now if you're just sitting there running a single low overhead task maybe it can do it, but when the rubber meets the road and you need to get things done FORGET IT.

Good points. If we were to poll SI members we'd probably find 90% of them using Wintel PC's on the desktop. This is an endorsement that the PC Wintel desktop environment is superior in cost effectiveness and productivity tools; also far superior in anti-productivity tools such as Unreal or Quake ;)

I have Sun workstation and CPQ NT crashstation. I avg about
1 reboot/week on PC ... often Lotus Notes locks up, can't seem
to end task, reboot. Sun has uptime of 45 days ... last reboot
was when I accidently kicked out the power cord.

when you say you have your PC running all the time do you mean 24 hours a day? - i use both a Sun Ultra and a Dell PC and the PC at home often has to be rebooted several times a day and i dont leave it on all the time - if I do it wont last 48 hours without a reboot - applications start acting funny and i inevitably get the BSOD. The Dell PC has been fairly reliable over 3 years - hasnt had any hw problems, but the components are mostly made by Sony, Western Digital, etc.

there's a command called uptime on my sparc station - currently it says over 158 days - i come in my office and work - not function as a Microsoft certified engineer for my wonderful, high quality Microsoft products.
