hey justin,

you ask a great question. i first started buying albums around '62. i never recall anything but shrink wrap. perhaps the price being on the jacket is a result of someone removing it from the shrink wrap and placing it on the jacket (not too likely, unless it went into a resale bin or you got it at a garage sale) or a record company putting it there as sort of a "msrp" (manufacturer's suggested retail price). the individual record shop could then price it for less if they so desired. i think that may be the case.

but i can not say with 100% certainty that those albums from the very early 60's were sealed in shrink wrap. as a teenager i worked for a company called eastern manufacturing in barrington, nj, that pressed mainly motown albums. this was around 1965. everything we shipped out of there was shrink wrapped.

i just went through a lot of vintage vinyl. most of the old albums did not have plastic still on them. but not one had a price tag on the jacket.

fwiw...

:)

Regarding shrink wrap, i looked through some of my albums and also found none with the price on the jacket. When i found the price, it was on the plastic wrap. i'd forgotten that albums were only a few bucks, it sure seemed like a lot more then.
Looking through the old albums sure brings back a lot of memories. I found myself looking at the "New Improved Blue Cheer" album and daydreaming. Does handling albums affect everyone the same? It feels totally different from looking through CDs.
