United Solar Systems Corp. and Detroit Edison Form Partnership to Install And Fund Solar Roof Array for Detroit's Cass Technical High School

May 12, 1999 15:43

TROY, Mich., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- United Solar Systems Corp. (United Solar) announced today the formation of a partnership to install a multi- kilowatt UNI-SOLAR(R) photovoltaic array on the roof of Cass Technical High School (Cass Tech) in Detroit, and to develop a solar curriculum which features use of the array. United Solar, Detroit Edison Co., the principal operating subsidiary of DTE Energy Co., and Cass Tech will jointly implement the project, with funding from the Detroit Edison Foundation and the State of Michigan (through the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center).

This project will give science and engineering students hands-on experience with a multi-kilowatt solar array. It will build upon a fully accredited solar curriculum which Detroit Edison has already developed for grades 4 through 8. The high school students will be encouraged to reach out, through demonstrations, presentations and other means, to other students and the community in general to increase awareness of renewable energy options. The curriculum, once finalized and accredited, will be made available to other schools for replication. "We are very excited to be part of this pioneering project," said George H. Cohen, Jr., Principal of Cass Tech. "The success of this project will have an important impact on future projects in other schools."

The project grew out of the announcement of a National Town Meeting (NTM) held in Detroit, Michigan, May 2-5, 1999, to start a national movement for sustainable development -- the achievement of economic prosperity without sacrificing the environment or our quality of life. One of the goals of the NTM is to stimulate ongoing projects and programs ("Legacy Projects") that will endure beyond the four-day meeting to increase public awareness and commitment to sustainable development. This project is designed to be a "Legacy Project" for sustainable energy practices that will serve as a model for other schools and communities.

United Solar is a joint venture of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. ("ECD") (Nasdaq: ENER) of Troy, Michigan and Canon Inc. of Japan. ECD and United Solar have pioneered, developed and hold basic patents covering the continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing of thin-film amorphous silicon alloy multi-junction solar cell material and related products including flexible solar battery chargers, framed power modules, UNI-KIT Lighting Systems and UNI-SOLAR(R) Roofing Shingles and Metal Roofing Panels.
