Sorry, Chris, I take Chuzz' side on this one. Four base ten, 11 base three, and IV base X are *the same thing*. Only the labels are different.
Are "four" and "4" the same thing?
The power of math is that it appears to transcend language. Show a putative alien (with a sense of sight - maybe that is a precondition to forming such concepts) a diagrammatic representation of Archimedes' law of right triangles, and it will likely recognize the underlying message.

Did you find a way to arrange the 17 objects in rows of equal numbers yet? No fair cheating by cutting them up. Then there are not 17 anymore. And no hiding one in your nose, or wherever.
