Jefferies' Smith Prefers Worldgate Over AOL In Web TV Arena

Dow Jones Newswires -- May 12, 1999

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--While Bruce Smith, an Internet analyst with Jefferies & Co., likes all major aspects of America Online Inc. (AOL), he prefers WorldGate Communications Inc. (WGAT) in the emerging arena of Internet television.

In a CNBC interview Wednesday, Smith said, America Online's AOL TV technology, requiring use of set-top boxes and similar to that being used by other companies breaking into the integrated Internet and television space, is expensive and cumbersome.

Worldgate's Internet TV solution, on the other hand, is "inexpensive and easier to deploy to a much broader audience," Smith said.

Smith, however, said that he maintains an "extremely favorable" outlook on America Online.
