Well if you pick up a boot virus, that's the most common virus you will get, it will make drives disappear. They are very common, and people who rarely use computers get them, mainly from sharing floppies and other programs with friends.

You should be running virus software. A virus can cause allot of headaches to track down why a system is acting strange.

Man, if nothing else you should at least run virus software, and the utilites that came with the OS should be good enough to fix any other problems.
