Dell Ties E-Storefront To Buyer Processes

(05/12/99, 4:54 p.m. ET)
By Tom Smith, InternetWeek

In his keynote address at the Networld + Interop show, chairman and CEO Michael Dell demonstrated the next generation of Dell's Premier Pages, which are custom sites that serve large commercial accounts.

The enhancements, now live and called Premier Commerce, include a dynamic pricing system that takes contract negotiations online. All Dell product lines can now be ordered using a single purchase order, and the Premier Pages offer "build-your-own" price quotes based on a customer's volume pricing agreement with Dell. Corporate buyers can also view each outstanding order generated by their companies, give approval, and submit the order to Dell.

The upgrade reflects a step toward the integration of applications on seller sites into corporate purchasing applications, and therefore gives Dell a slight leg up in a fast-moving segment of e-commerce, said Aberdeen Group analyst David Alschuler.

"The issue here is who controls the customer and how and if the buyer's app is looking to control transactions. Dell needs a way of dealing with those buyer-centric apps," Alschuler said.

"Companies like Ariba are opening up ways to integrate seller sites into buying applications and this is really a precursor to that," Alschuler added.

The enhancements should appeal in particular to the largest Dell customers with major purchasing automation initiatives and those who use applications such as Ariba.

Although there are roughly 15,000 Premier Pages now, it's the top 400 or 500 customers that derive the most benefit from the custom pages, according to Joseph Marengi, a senior vice president and group general manager at Dell. Those customers can even set up multiple Premier Pages to reflect different Dell purchasing agreements in each division, he said.

Dell's latest moves should also help feed customers' desire to manage procurement of desktop computers online, Marengi said. "This is the next step in our evolution" of business-to-business purchasing capabilities, he said.

A good indicator of the coming earnings. I am in the military and we have a ton of computers in our building. I have a Compaq on my desk that worked ok but today they just trashed about 60 Compaq's and replaced them with Dells. I asked the guy in charge why and he said it was for the Y2K problems anticipated with Compaq. Too many of the parts for Compaq are proprietary, where Dell is easy to upgrade and the service with the Dells were much better. He went on to tell me a horror story about a problem they had with CPQ service a few months back. Perhaps this is another look at the end user and which way they are turning. I know the military is tight on money and a move like this really made me take notice. I hold lots of both CPQ and DELL stock but I found this very interesting.

Stockman, well, we should know what's going on by this coming Tue. Sure wish we had some good data so we could do our own analysis. If for one think Dell will do quite well...but, can't put the numbers down on paper.
