As for another directory in the same partition versus another partition, I have one comment: The only advantage of another partition that I know about is that you can keep the same name for the NT partition, which you can't if it's on the same partition. I have not had success booting a cloned NT from a different directory name, though you're supposed to be able to do that.

What is the call in the boot.ini file if one wants to boot an alternate NT in a separate directory in lieu of the second partition? Would one just change \WINNT to \WINNT2 using as an example Clarence's boot.ini file noted below?

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT
Workstation Version 4.00"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows NT
Workstation Version 4.00"
