Rogers Cantel and Wynd Communications announce alliance to provide mobile wireless communications services to Canadians who are deaf or hard of hearing
New WyndTell service and device, first wireless communication product designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, will be available from The Canadian Hearing Society
TORONTO, May 14 /CNW/ - Rogers Cantel Inc, Canada's largest wireless communications company, and Wynd Communications, the U.S. leader in providing wireless communications services to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, today announced an exclusive strategic alliance to deliver WyndTell(TM) service in Canada. WyndTell service will be demonstrated today (May 14) with The Canadian Hearing Society during Mayfest and Deaf Fest organized by the Ontario Association of the Deaf in Toronto. WyndTell, which operates with the new Cantel(R) AT&T(TM) Interactive Messaging Service, is a technological breakthrough for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. Together, the two services enable users to communicate with almost anyone via TTY, e-mail, fax machines, alphanumeric pagers and voice telephones. The Cantel AT&T Interactive Messaging Service and WyndTell Service operate on the RIM Interactive Pager 950, a powerful communications tool that fits comfortably in the palm of a person's hand, and includes a full QWERTY keyboard. Together, the services solve the problem of searching for pay phones or phone jacks to plug in TTY devices, or relying on strangers to communicate, enabling people who are deaf or hard of hearing to enjoy the occupational and social benefits of mobile communication for the first time. ''Wynd's mission is to provide our customers with wireless communications services that give them the freedom to accomplish everything possible in their busy lives,'' said Judith Viera, vice president of business development for Wynd Communications. ''We are proud to be working with Rogers Cantel and see this alliance as the next step in making WyndTell available to the widest range of people who are deaf or hard of hearing.'' ''Using the Cantel AT&T Mobitex network, the WyndTell service will allow anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing to 'stay connected anywhere, anytime','' said Rick Giel, Vice President and General Manager, Data and Paging, Rogers Cantel. ''The WyndTell service is a natural extension of the Interactive Messaging service we've offered in Canada since January 1999.'' ''This technology goes a long way to breaking down the barriers for deaf, late-deafened and hard of hearing people,'' said David Allen, Executive Director of The Canadian Hearing Society. The WyndTell service and the device are available through the Canadian Hearing Society, 271 Spadina Road, Toronto, ON M5R 2V3 (416) 928-2503 TTY (416) 928-2509.
