Ataturk was determined to bring the Turkish Republic into the modern world. He basically cribbed criminal law from the Napoleonic Code, and civil law from the British Common Law.He forbade clerical garb in public, and insisted on universal citizenship for all Turkish subjects.He voluntarily relinquished power when he thought that the Turks were capable of initiating a democracy, and in the intervening years the Turkish military has a tradition as the saviours of democracy, taking over when they feel as if Turkish institutions are threatened, and giving up power when there is stability.
