No they can't. Because once everyone knew that GS had to liquidate, the value of GS would disappear. But in anycase the treasury would bail them out.

IF they are short, wouldn't it have to be reported in some of the regulatory documents that they filed for the IPO?

BTW gold is up $1.40 in Asia tomorrow. I have noticed that when it is up relatively strongly in Asia, the London and US markets are also stronger the following day. IMHO gold is either going to around $270 and then to $325 or it is going from here to $325. Either way it is going there
