Next day closes at 174 - and not on any news.

Strong buy reiterations from Blodgett and/or Meeker. Thats what moves the top tier internets like that.

<<I have to disagree. In this sector, i have often found big moves come suddenly. Case in point - YHOO on 5/7/99 - take a look at the chart. Drifting down for 7 days from 184 to 147. Next day closes at 174 - and not on any news.>>

I agree that big moves can come suddenly, but there is "almost always" a tipoff beforehand of surging volume and stock price. It may be a few days or a just few hours, but its there if you're quick enough to take advantage.

Case in point: The Friday before the Allen announcement, around 1:30 the volume on GNET picked up dramatically and the stock surged from 81 to 87 while the other nets languished. The window was small but anyone watching GNET closely that day made a bundle.

With YHOO you missed 2 things:

First, it did not go from 147 to 184 in one day, but two. Granted there wasn't much time, but if you bought into the rally Monday in the 150's , you would have a 15+ gain.

Second, as Michelle pointed out, there was news, big news, that Blodgett was upgrading YHOO. This explained the mysterious 10 point move on "no news" on Monday.

The problem with all this is that, unless you're glued to the monitor, it's easy to miss the signs before a big move, especially those 2-3 hour windows like we had with GNET.

Good luck with your purchase today.
