Europe Online Networks Selects Harmonic Data Systems' CyberStream for Its 'Internet in the Sky'
CyberStream to Power Europe's First Satellite-Delivered Broadband Internet Service
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1999--Harmonic Data Systems Ltd. (HDS), a subsidiary of Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT - news) today announced that Europe Online Networks S.A. has chosen the HDS CyberStream(TM) system for its new broadband ''Internet in the Sky'' service.

Europe Online has specified the CyberStream TRX 100 Data Gateway to manage its Internet service at the Astra satellite uplink site in Luxembourg where the company is based.

In addition, the CyberStream end-user PC/PCI satellite receiver card, Enterprise1(TM) LAN Router/Receiver and cable modems have been certified by Europe Online for use by subscribers to the ''Internet in the Sky.'' At this year's Cable and Satellite MEDIACAST 99 event at Earl's Court, London (17-19 May 1999), Harmonic Data Systems and Europe Online Networks S.A. are jointly demonstrating the ''Internet in the Sky'' service -- live via the Astra satellite -- on the Harmonic Data Systems booth (No. 120) on the show floor.

Europe Online's ''Internet in the Sky'' is a new European-wide service providing broadband Internet access for consumer and business users through end-user devices such as PCs, televisions and telephones, using their existing satellite and cable broadcast connections. The company has leased two digital transponders on the Astra satellite system -- the world's largest DTH satellite system transmitting to over 27 million satellite dishes and 44 million broadband cable connections throughout Europe -- to deliver its service.

''The increased bandwidth available through the 'Internet in the Sky' system will allow access to a richer, more varied, broadband Internet. By working in partnership with technology-led companies such as Harmonic Data Systems we are able to bring this experience to end users,'' said Candace Johnson, president of Europe Online Networks S.A.

Nationwide Deployment of CyberStream System

Follows Successful Trial

Harmonic Data Systems Ltd.(HDS), a subsidiary of Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT - news) today announced that Tele Danmark, the largest provider of telecommunications services in Denmark, has chosen the CyberStream(TM) end-to-end system from HDS for the high-speed Internet service it is offering over its nationwide cable television network.

Tele Danmark has already made a substantial purchase of the CyberStream system, in what is the first commercial deployment of one-way DVB-compliant cable modems in Europe.

''The launch of our service and the selection of CyberStream follows a successful trial involving 100 of our cable television subscribers,'' said Ole Mikkelsen, vice president and managing director of Tele Danmark's Cable TV Division. ''We know that there is pent-up demand in Denmark for high-speed Internet access and the trial has proven that CyberStream has the real-world performance necessary for our service.''

Tele Danmark's cable-based Internet service is being offered to 800,000 residential subscribers throughout the country, one third of all Danish TV households. Initially, subscribers will be able to connect to the Internet at up to 512 Kbps. The company is distributing CyberStream cable modems by mail order at first and, from the autumn, plans to distribute through its retail stores. In addition to deploying CyberStream cable modems, Tele Danmark has installed the CyberStream data gateway with the ProView(TM) network management system and Pro$tream(TM) for QoS bandwidth management, in its cable headend in Copenhagen.

''Having built modern DVB cable and telco networks that span Denmark, it's natural that Tele Danmark would leverage both networks to provide its customers nationwide with high-speed Internet services,'' said Danny Elbaz, Harmonic Data Systems' vice president of marketing. ''CyberStream's support for the DVB standard and its use of telco return allow Tele Danmark to quickly deploy its Internet service without having to further invest in its existing cable network infrastructure.''

First European Cable Customer for Harmonic's TRANsend Digital Gateway Product
Portugal's TV Cabo Using TRANsend to Generate and Transport Digital Signal
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1999--Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT - news) today announced that TV Cabo, the leading cable and satellite operator in Portugal, is upgrading its cable service by installing Harmonic's TRANsend(TM) digital headend products, allowing for video, audio and Teletext encoding, scrambling and transmission.

The TRANsend digital headend has been installed in Madrid, Spain, at the premises of TV Cabo's partner company, Canal Viver, and will be used to generate digital video from Portuguese language programming specifically for TV Cabo subscribers. The TRANsend gateway will then transport this programming to TV Cabo's 50,000 DTH subscribers in Portugal, and also to TV Cabo's 20 headends from where it will be re-broadcast to more than 600,000 HFC subscribers.

Harmonic's TRANsend was chosen because it met the immediate upgrade needs at TV Cabo, providing excellent quality video encoding as well as DVB-compliant scrambling and a more cost-effective solution than competing products. For TV Cabo the Harmonic EMX 8000 encryptor multiplexor module was integrated with Nagra Vision's conditional access system.

''Upgrading our service to digital was made easier because TRANsend's open architecture enables it to work with our existing setup,'' commented Manuel Sequeira, director at TV Cabo. ''This sped up the whole process and meant we had no major interruptions of service. An additional bonus was the extremely short delivery and integration time which allowed us to complete the upgrade on time and on budget.''

''TV Cabo is representative of the new breed of European cable operator, one that has started down the road to a digital future with its purchase of the TRANsend digital gateway,'' said Jan Van Hoecke, Harmonic Europe's general manager. ''TRANsend's flexible, expandable and open design will allow this operator to continue along this road and in the future introduce new services such as digital video channels and high-speed Internet access quickly, easily and cost effectively.''
