I read that the army units which quashed the demonstrations were for the most part illiterate peasant units from the countryside, with envy toward the growing prosperity of the city dwellers. They were brought in because the party leaders knew they could be counted on simply because of their envy and dislike of "the cosmopolitans."

Can anyone here comment on that?
