I would like to tell you what Chinese from Mainland think about Taiwan Independence: 1) Before Jiang left mainland, his gov. already taxed Chinese people up to 1997. So before Taiwan declares independent, first returning those 30 years of excessive taxes. 2) Before Jiang left mainland, his gov. took all the gold from China, which estimated at over 700+ tons (one ton = 1,000 kilo, 1 kilo = about 35.7 oz.). One of the most important reason for Taiwan's economy can rise so fast is because of so many tons of gold as the reserve for Taiwanese currency. So before Taiwan declares independent, first returning all these 700+ tons of gold. Those belong to China, not Taiwan. 3) Before Jiang left mainland, his gov. took almost all the treasures from Palace Museum. Those treasures belong to China, and those are the accumulation over 5000+ years of Chinese civilization. They mean everything to Chinese people. Even if now, after 50 years, they still haven't finished opening all the cases. One can just imagine how many of them. So before Taiwan declares independent, first returning all China's treasures. Those belong to China, not Taiwan. 4) Taiwan always says Chinese do not fight Chinese. But if Taiwan wants to be independent, then that will become Chinese fight Taiwanese. China and Taiwan are like two brothers in the same family. So what if they cannot resolve the difference by peaceful means? Then let's fight, just like the Civil war here in the US. And this has nothing to do with any other nations. This is family fight. Yeah, by the way, my aunt (my father's younger sister), uncle are from Taiwan, and I have five cousins, and some of them are here, and some of them are still in Taiwan. They are all grownups and have their own children. And none of them want Taiwan to be independent, and my aunt even said to me that China should just go ahead and take Taiwan back. As a matter of fact, China does not even have to use any weapon, just use enough submarine to block Taiwan. Don't even have to be long, 6 months, Taiwan will be back.
