Hi Frank:

I share your skepticism about GE to the desktop at
the current time. However, it has become obvious that
FE is a must for many engineering applications involving
exchanging simulations data between workstations. So,
GE to the desktop in professional environments may come
sooner than I thought.

The design of chips complying to the 802.3ab standard is
extremely challenging. A 5-level PAM modulation scheme
is used for each line, which ultimately reduces the voltage
range for opening the sampling eye to 0.5V. So trellis coded
modulation is used with a Viterbi decoder. Adaptive filters
must also be used to remove the interference of all 4 cables
with one another. This is an impressive engineering feat.

A perhaps nitpicking point however is that the standard which
is being implemented was not proposed by BRCM, but by LEVL/INTC
based on earlier work by one of its engineers in collaboration
with G. Ungerboek and others at IBM Zurich on FE over 2 CAT3
cables, a standard which was never adopted since CAT5 cabling
has become prevalent.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
