You have hit on one of Rambus' powerful advantages. Full performance memory when only a single chip is used. SDRAM achieves its bandwidth by ganging up chips on a wide bus. For game manufacturers and other consumer products the simplest and cheapest architecture is to embed the rambus controller in the processor or asic and put 1 chip directly on the motherboard. When chip density hits 256Mb that is 32MB, at 1 gigabit on gets 128 megabytes on one chip. Remember 1 gigabit memory is on the industry roadmap for volume production in 2002. This advantage is touted on the rambus site under the term "granularity"
