There's a quote in the preface to one of Vonnegut's books (unfortunately I forget which one) that was from a letter sent to him by a student named John Figler. Figler said that after reading his books he had decided that Vonnegut's philosophy could be summed up in a single phrase. Vonnegut's response was that he wished he had known this years ago as it would have saved him from having to write all of those books.

The phrase was "love may fail, but courtesy will prevail." I often think of this when I see your oh-so-courteous posts.

My own favorite Vonnegut statement is from God Bless You Mr. Rosewater (which I believe is currently being made into a movie). It's when the lawyer (Norman Mushari?) says that the easiest way to make money is to be there when a large sum of money is changing hands and take some of it as it goes by. You know, like the tobacco settlement, estate taxes, the Welfare system, Social Security, Lotto, etc.

However, my favorite of his novels is Slapstick by a pretty good margin. I often think of his idea that the thing that modern life is most lacking is a sense of belonging -- an extended family. I think that's what this forum is for a lot of us. Love 'em or hate 'em, these people are our Daffodil 11's.
