Personally, I think that what we call emotions are simply overly complex and self-referencing interpretations of the same things that, in animals, we call instincts. As such, they are probably more reliable than many believe. However, nothing can beat a well-established habit. Emotions come and go, but a habit stays with you, often even against your own will. I mostly agree with you about the novels following Slapstick, although I did like Deadeye Dick and thought that Bluebeard was pretty good too. I haven't yet read anything more current than that, although Hocus Pocus looks like it could be good. I hadn't thought about the problems with putting God Bless You Mr. Rosewater on film, but they do exist. Not only do we have the ongoing failure of Hollywood to accurately translate a novel to film, but in the liberal PC Hollywood of today, there's a great possibility that the "it takes a village" style ending could be over-emphasized and the legal maneuvering leading up to it downplayed. Just have to wait and see... -BLT P.S. According to the preview post spell check, hocus is okay, but pocus is misspelled. Whatever...
