You are assuming paranoia in U.S. ventures. I don't... Half bad compared to what? Bulgaria? Albania? Compared to Western Europe and the United States, it was still backward, an its relative prosperity had to do mainly with partial marketization, as in Hugary... Yes, you might get a lot of heat if you decided to straighten out a Western European country. But you have made it sound as if we have such hegemony over them that that shouldn't be a major consideration... There is no such thing as "no competition", and Yugoslavia didn't rate any concern... The prosperity of the last 15 years or so has been broad- based, the proverbial rising tide. There have always been gated communities, that is one of the prerogatives of affluence. As for jails, if they are overstocked, it is because of excessively harsh drug penalties. The States remain the destination of choice for legal and illegal immigrants alike, because they offer great opportunity to the ambitious...
