Dave - it would be interesting to see what Barrick's risk management assessment of its policy is. In the example I gave John Hunt the $400 figure was picked out of the air as an example only. I think all you've said about borrowing and investing is probably right - but you've omitted the forward sale part - which is a separate and parralel transaction and which IMO give rise to the '$400' Regards.
