Another signal... Not only is MSFT beating Novell in directory enabled networks (see post #22589) but also beating Lotus Notes in groupware according to DataQuest and Gartner Keithshamicrosoft.com A recent analyst report from Dataquest, entitled "Groupware: Exchange Erupts in the U.S." (also issued as a GartnerAdvisory from the Gartner Group), states that more companies deployed Exchange Server in 1998 as "collaborative software" than any other product, including Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise. The report further confirms the increasing market momentum of Exchange Server during the past year, describing 1998 as a "four-star year for Microsoft Exchange." Key findings of the study, which was independently financed, include: More companies installed Exchange Server for "collaboration software" (including what is historically called "group-ware") during 1998 than any other similar product. The report additionally declares that Microsoft clearly outpaced IBM/Lotus in market penetration, with an installed base of nearly 60 percent compared to 32 percent for Notes and 28 percent for GroupWise. Exchange deployments increased 23 percent, while deployments of Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise together decreased 18 percent, indicating Exchange is adding new customers deploying collaboration solutions as well as helping Notes and Novell customers move to the leading platform. The report states "Exchange slammed down the accelerator during 1998 and pulled onto the same lap with Notes/Domino." Among companies identifying themselves as adopters of collaborative technology, nearly 60 percent had installed Exchange Server, a significant increase over the past year. Meanwhile, Lotus Notes, according to the report, "took a back seat" as they slipped to slightly more than half of Exchange's rate of deployment. Organizations of all sizes are using Exchange Server for collaboration and the report shows a significant deployment among both small and very large organizations. For example, Exchange is found in two-thirds of the organizations with under 1,000 employees using collaborative software. "The trends all point positive for Microsoft," indicates the study. Exchange made a dramatic jump into the financial services and manufacturing sectors during 1998, rapidly building market share in what were once predominately Lotus strongholds. Exchange Server and Microsoft Outlook® provide a comprehensive set of collaboration and application development services built on the most reliable, scalable messaging platform in the industry. Exchange enables immediate collaboration for group scheduling, document sharing, customer tracking, and shared task lists. Exchange also provides a powerful platform for building both tracking and workflow applications.
