Telewest<TWT.L>locked in merger talks,losses widen
LONDON, May 13 (Reuters) - Telewest Communications Plc, the
British cable group locked in merger talks with peer Cable and
Wireless Communications <CWZ.L>, said on Thursday it was riding
a wave of demand for its services as it posted wider pre-tax
losses.
Telewest said almost 34.7 percent of households in its
territories were taking its packages and fewer were leaving as
it unveiled first quarter, pre-tax losses of 135.08 million
pounds ($218.6 million), up from a 70.25 million loss last time.
Britain's second biggest cable group -- in which U.S.
software giant Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O> is buying a 29.9 percent
stake -- said it added nearly 29,000 net new TV customers and
over 24,000 net new residential telephone customers in the
quarter, giving it a customer base of 1.4 million households.
