VocalTec plans 40 layoffs, 15 in Israel

By Ami Ginzburg, Ha'aretz Correspondent
VocalTec Communications has announced plans to pare down its workforce in light of delays in the development of protocols for telephone communications on the Internet.

The company is planning to fire 40 of its employees, 15 of them in Israel, and to halt work on several projects still in the development phase. VocalTec announced last month that it would not meet its financial forecasts for the first quarter.

The cuts, which are expected to cost the firm about $1 million, will leave VocalTec with a staff of about 300.

As part of the streamlining plans, VocalTec will also stop selling communications systems directly to organizations, instead focusing on the market of communications services providers, telephone companies and Internet providers. VocalTec is considering trying to find a strategic partner to boost its ailing division.

Sources in the slumping telephony field say they believe the market may rebound sometime early next year.
