Interesting discussion on cable vs. xDSL. I guess my take is that in the long run, they will be about equivalent. DSL will evolve to more local, fiber-based concentrators, which will shorten copper runs and allow higher bandwidth. (I.e., instead of running the DSL line 9,000 feet from my house to the CO, it will run maybe 1,000 feet to the local concentrator.) Cable will have to something similar (perhaps smaller and more numerous head ends, interconnected with fiber).

Short-haul wireless may be a third contender, perhaps with today's cell phone companies as players. (Why run cable or copper to every house on my block, instead of running fiber to one point on the block, and then digital, high-bandwidth wireless from there?)

All these delivery methods will be competing to deliver TV, videoconferencing, phone, Web access, email, downloadable music, etc. to the end user. This will require a huge infrastructure buildout, but I don't see why that wouldn't happen: the dollars are there.

Any thoughts?

cable speed cannot be guaranteed b/c it is dependent on the number of users.
DSL congestion is just one level removed. All those lines go to a gateway that can become congested. It is easier to expand in the back office than on the telephone poles, but you can count on congestion rising as high as people will tolerate it.
