In reference to Taiwan, again from the World Book, large Chinese settlement began in the 1600s. Dutch traders dominated the island for a few decades, but were expelled by a Ming dynasty official, who wanted to use Taiwan to lunch a rebellion against the Manchus. The Manchu dynasty conquered Taiwan in 1683. Japan ruled Taiwan from 1895 to 1945. Chiang Kai-shek set up the Kuomintang government in exile in 1949. For years, both sides of the dispute agreed that there was one China, and Taiwan was part of it, the disagreement centering on the legitimate government. Only since the elimination of martial law and the introduction of democracy has there been a discussion of Taiwanese independence (i.e., for the last 15 years or so)....
