(Nasdaq:SUNW - news) today announced robust real-time operating system (RTOS) capability for its SPARCengine(tm) family of compactPCI (cPCI) board products. The company will offer customers high-performance OEM solutions supporting Sun Microsystems' own ChorusOS(tm) RTOS or VxWorks®, the RTOS component of the Tornado(tm) development environment from Wind River Systems, Inc.
Both RTOS options will enable system designers to rapidly develop and deploy powerful 64-bit UltraSPARC(tm) and 32-bit microSPARC(tm) processor-based applications for telecommunications infrastructure and enterprise telephony needs. Additionally, the UltraSPARC-II 64-bit, scalable architecture will provide system designers the flexibility to significantly optimize either operating system for high performance.
The RTOS solutions, now available immediately for the UltraSPARC processor-based SPARCengine CP 1500 compactPCI board, will be phased in to support the entire compactPCI board product line by end of year. The RTOS/board options enable the real-time features of the ChorusOS RTOS and VxWorks in a multiprocessing environment while allowing the integration of the Solaris(tm) operating environment for transaction server, intensive database and high availability applications.

The ChorusOS system software provides an innovative RTOS for high-availability telecommunications equipment and for new web-based consumer devices such as webphones and set-top boxes. It offers a ''hot'' restart capability as well as a ''hot swap'' capability, and dynamic reconfiguration. The ChorusOS system also provides close integration with the Solaris operating environment as well as Java technology support for networking equipment through the Java Dynamic Management(tm) Kit.
Wind River's Tornado development environment is a complete set of development tools designed specifically for the needs of embedded real-time software development. Tornado is also an open framework that allows other tool vendors to plug in their value-add products. Sun Microsystems' SPARCengine CP family of single-slot 64-bit-based cPCI boards incorporates Sun's latest UltraSPARC-IIi processor technology. The 425-MHz CP 1500, with 2 MB of ecache, delivers the fastest 64-bit performance and the largest secondary cache of any single-slot cPCI board on the market. The 300-MHz CP 1400 features the best price/performance of any 64-bit-based cPCI board product on the market, and is designed to provide basic system control and real-time support for building telecommunications infrastructures and CTI applications, including VoIP gateways, communications servers and call centers.
