DR: I don't know whether to be one of the short-term traders purging profits, as you put it, or one of the accumulators at 26.

My trading shares were bought at 23 1/4. I intended to sell at 27/28 or some point on the way and buy back at 24/25. I put a sell order in for 27 1/4 but did not get it. Although the drift back has started, the move to 27 was more than a pop, there has been consistent and heavy buying. If 25.5 - 26.5 is to be the new base then it is may not be worth selling for fear of being out if and when good news is announced. I think that there will be a series of positive announcements to come from COMPAQ in the next few weeks. Anticipation of that news will also support the share price.
The big potential negatives are (a) bad news on 2Q earnings (b) major market correction. A third potential negative is the flare-up of scare stories about the negative effect of YK2 on second half sales.

Notwithstanding the above, I still think there is a chance of it drifting back to 24/25 (and 22/23 in the context of any major market correction).
