Tellabs Supplies NetUno With SDH Access Technology for its Fiber Optic NetworkIn Venezuela MartisDXX(TM) System Selected To Manage Business Services Network LISLE, Ill., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs (Nasdaq: TLAB) announced today that NetUno, a rapidly growing competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) and Internet service provider (ISP) in Venezuela, is using Tellabs' SDH carrier- class equipment, management system and technology for its fiber optic-based business services network in the country's five largest cities. NetUno has active networks in Caracas, Maracaibo and Valencia and is developing networks in Barquisimeto and Maracay. NetUno is a wholly-owned data and telecommunications subsidiary of the VenInfoTel holding group, which also owns and operates cable television systems in 11 cities, including the top five markets. The MartisDXX system enables NetUno to offer a variety of access services from its ATM/SDH metropolitan fiber network, including private lines, Frame Relay, virtual private networks (VPNs) and Internet access services. "We chose Tellabs for its manageability, advanced technology and reliability," said Peter Stevenson, President and COO of NetUno. "Tellabs' MartisDXX technology allows us to offer business and carrier customers a choice for a wide range of data and voice services today and will permit us, after deregulation of state-owned CANTV's basic services monopoly in the year 2000, to adapt our network to meet the needs of the marketplace for switched voice services." Eprotel, CA, a Venezuelan company that specializes in integrating technologies and providing engineering support and technical assistance, supplied NetUno with the Tellabs equipment. The two companies began working together when Eprotel supplied NetUno with MartisDXX systems to test their ability to meet NetUno's needs. "The fit was so good that NetUno has requested more MartisDXX systems," said Juan Da Silva, general manager of Eprotel. "Our relationship is long term. Because of its existing fiber optic infrastructure, NetUno is positioned to be one of the top competitors once deregulation begins." Gaston Pereira, vice president and general manager for Tellabs in Latin America and the Caribbean, observed that the telecommunications market in Venezuela is "on the verge of fast growth" once liberalization takes effect. "With approximately 2.6 million lines currently in service and a penetration of about 11 percent, there is sufficient unmet demand to warrant great future growth in services," Pereira said. The MartisDXX system currently is in operation in more than 150 networks in 60 countries worldwide, providing intelligent transport for mobile services and multiservice platforms for a broad range of business services, including LAN interconnect, digital leased line, Frame Relay and PBX interconnection. NetUno and VenInfoTel are preparing to enter the local and long-distance voice markets with the onset of the full liberalization of the Venezuelan telecommunications sector in 2000. NetUno is the sole operator in Venezuela, other than the state monopoly CANTV, with a significant installed fiber optic network. NetUno focuses on broadband local access and currently uses its national Value Added Services and Private Network concessions to offer integrated business solutions to small and medium businesses, large corporate users and carrier customers. Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications services.
