Initially the National news was interviewing "experts" on terrorism who were proclaiming this the middle eastern walking duck. It was a shock to everyone when Timothy McVea surfaced as the perp. In the mean time the phone lines at the Mosque and Muslim school were plenty busy here in Denver. I'm guessing that was repeated in every community. We tried to keep it low key because that kind of exposure locks in the "us and them" attitude of non-muslims living around us. Probably one third of the muslims I knew just stayed home for a couple of days. If it had turned out to be a middle eastern person who was the bomber, we'd probably still be peaking out of the curtains. If we complain about being terrorized the response usually includes Saddam's name or Khadafi et al. Not high on the list of topics to bring up for community discussion. This type of incident raises that awareness and even though we are innocent we will get paranoid looks in the grocery store for the next week or two, or until it passes over.
