Mexico's Acer soars on Telmex Internet deal talk

MEXICO CITY, May 13 (Reuters) - Mexican computer firm Acer Computec Latinoamerica soared on Thursday fueled by expectations it will soon sign a deal to sell computers to giant Telefonos de Mexico , traders said.

Acer's shares sky-rocketed 38.69 percent to 3.80 pesos in the local bourse.

''It seems Acer will sell computers to Telmex ... for a posible deal to provide Telmex with computers for Internet services'', one trader said.

Sources at Telmex and Acer could not immediate confirm the talk of the hardware deal.

Acer Computec is the Latin American division of Taiwan computer giant Acer Computer International Ltd .

Other traders said Telmex might not be directly purchasing computers from Acer but near a deal under which Prodigy Internet access would included in Acer's basic personal computer software packages.

Telmex, together with telecommunications investment firm Global Carso Telecom , are Prodigy Communications Corp.'s (PRGY - news) main shareholders.

Telmex is Mexico's leading Internet service provider (ISP) with some 200,000 users at the end of April.

Beginning May 1, the company started offering Internet access under the Prodigy trademark to its clients.

Telmex officials said recently that the company was looking to develop strategic alliances with Mexico's main computer providers.

They said Mexican subsidiaries of computer giants such as Hewlett Packard (HWP - news), Dell (DELL - news) and Acer itself were among the posible new partners for Telmex.
