Premier Laser Successfully Completes Testing of New Dental Technology for Composite Curing, Teeth Whitening
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 1999--Premier Laser Systems Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:PLSIA) Monday announced completion of successful company-sponsored tests of its new solid state semiconductor technology for dental composite curing and teeth whitening.
The technology to be used in a soon-to-be-released new product, BluLaze, is an important advancement for Premier Laser Systems, holder of 91 U.S. and international patents and more than 100 FDA clearances. American Dental Association statistics have previously shown that resin-based composites were estimated to be used in nearly 50 million private practice dental procedures yearly, with that number growing as composites continue to replace metal-based amalgams.

Additionally, other industry sources estimate that about 70 percent of U.S. dental practitioners perform teeth whitening procedures using take-home bleaching kits, lasers or other means.

"Premier has a lot of experience in the composite curing and teeth whitening markets," said Premier Laser Systems President and Chief Executive Officer Colette Cozean, Ph.D. "Dentists want very fast composite curing, the ability to generate revenue with in-office teeth whitening and they want all of this at an affordable price point. This new BluLaze, when available, will provide exactly that."

The laboratory studies indicate that BluLaze will offer more efficiency in its pure curing energy delivery than standard halogen or arc plasma curing lamps. BluLaze takes only three seconds to cure a standard 2 to 3 mm layer of dental composite material, which is faster than five to 10 seconds for the average plasma arc source and 40 seconds for the conventional halogen bulb.

In addition, BluLaze cured composites at a depth of 5.6 mm to 8 mm compared with 4.5 to 5.9 maximum for plasma arc and other lamp technologies.

"Dentistry is increasingly a cosmetic field of medicine," said David Winn III, D.D.S. of Denver. "Studies have shown that the time spent curing filling materials is at or near the top of the list in expenses to the dentist and the patient. The small footprint, speed, deep curing ability and low heat generation of BluLaze should make it a real benefit to my practice.

"I believe it could reduce the time a patient spends in the chair and greatly improve the quality of the service I can provide my patients. It is definitely an important step forward in technology to be able to have an instrument that can do both composite curing and tooth whitening in a piece of equipment the size of a telephone."

"We are excited to be bringing a technology to the market that we believe efficiently and economically meets the needs of the dentist. BluLaze will be an ideal addition to our curing and whitening line, which includes another leading product, the Arago argon laser," said Cozean.

Premier Laser Systems develops, manufactures and markets diagnostic and therapeutic products for the eyecare, dentistry and surgical markets including lasers, fiber optic delivery systems and associated products for a variety of applications.
