Amazon's real downfall is that they will never make a profit off of selling books! Borders reported a loss of 6 cents a share from their web site last year. Ebay is making money, but that's because they don't have to stock inventory and don't have to maintain their own database--their buyers and sellers enter all the information for them. Every time a new book comes out, Amazon has to put it on the site; every time a book goes out of print, they have to note that; etc. Huge investment in time and manpower.

I don't know of a single retail company (excluding porn sites) which is making money strictly off their web site. There may be some, but not known to me.

I'll check out buy.com and someone also mentioned fatbrain? I haven't ordered books over the web too often but since I can get a huge break on taxes on a pricey book, it easily offsets the shipping.

So you're in Michigan!

JY: Watch out for BUY.COM's -- S&H charge it often increases their total book price above the competition
