This doesn't have to be either or.

There's nothing stopping someone from having a core "buy and hold" portfolio; in addition to taking a portion of one's funds and trading the more volatile issues.

What percentage you put at higher risk depends upon a lot of factors. What works for me may not be appropriate for any one else.

Anyone taking a higher risk approach than buying the very best quality companies and holding them should consider what other sources of income they have should things go awry; what the demands are for expenditures / timing of those expenses; and what their own tolerance of risk may be.

e.g. - A retired Vancouver lawyer committed suicide after the BRE-X fiasco.

Whatever you decide, best wishes,
Ian.

Richard: I like Ian's response. I do not think Bob is a pure holder of these companies. He has said that he does trade them. I will be out of them some day totally somewhere near the peak of the cycle with any luck. Remember, in advocating UTEK in a newsletter to a general audience, Bob may be under different constraints than what you or I operate under at any given time.
